Anant Chaturdashi, the main visarjan day, falls on Friday 25 September 2026. For a lot of people that means leaving the office and going straight into a procession.
This is the one day in the festival where practical advice genuinely diverges from festive advice, and it is worth being blunt about why.
What a visarjan actually involves
Crowds pressed close. Colour powder. Water, sometimes a lot of it. Walking, often far, often in sun. Your hands occupied with a thali, a rope, or somebody else's child.
None of that is compatible with the jewellery you would wear to a wedding, and pretending otherwise is how people lose things.
The rule for the day
Nothing you would be upset to lose. Nothing that can be pulled.
No drops, no hoops, no long chains, no loose bangles. In a dense crowd anything that hangs can catch on a dupatta or a bag strap - the single most common way earrings are lost in India.
crystal-edged-gold-leaf-studs is about right: enough detail to look like you dressed for the day, nothing protruding to catch.
Water is the other half
Immersion means water, often colour powder before it, and both are hard on any finish. Near the water, the honest answer is to wear the least precious thing you own that still looks good - which is what imitation jewellery is for, and worth its own article.
Rinse and dry anything splashed as soon as you are home. Colour powder left sitting on metal overnight is what causes damage, not the splash itself.
What works at the desk and still works at 6 PM
Gold-Toned Infinity Link Rope Chain is short enough to sit under a kurta neckline rather than swinging free, so it survives a crowd in a way a long pendant does not. slim-zigzag-ring sits flat and costs little enough that a scratch is not a tragedy.
That is the whole list. One pair of studs, one short chain, one slim ring. Anything more is something to keep track of while you are trying to enjoy the day.
Leave the rest in your desk drawer
If you dressed up for the morning aarti at the office, take the heavier pieces off before you leave and collect them on Monday. The least glamorous advice here, and the most likely to save you money.
three-stud-everyday-trio is the sensible starting point. See also the ten-day plan leading up to this.
