How to choose pendant chains

A pendant either sits where the eye already goes or it disappears into a neckline. That is the trouble with buying one from a photograph - the model's neckline is not yours, and chain length is what decides the outcome.

For Indian workwear the two hard cases are a kurta and a formal shirt. A kurta's neckline is often deep enough to swallow a short chain; a shirt collar competes with anything sitting too high. Length solves both.

Chain length

A shorter chain sits at the base of the throat and reads well above a closed neckline. A longer one falls onto the chest and needs open space to be seen at all. Match the length to the neckline, not to the pendant.

Pendant scale

A small pendant on a fine chain reads as everyday. Scale either one up and it becomes the focal point - which means the earrings should then step back.

Layering

Leave a clear gap between layers. Two chains of near-identical length tangle and read as a mistake; vary the length first, then the pendant size.

Where the clasp sits

A clasp that keeps riding forward is a length problem, not a fault. A slightly longer chain carrying a heavier pendant stays centred better than a short one.

What chain length works with a kurta?

Which necklace works with a formal shirt?

A short, fine chain worn above the collar line, or a longer one worn over a closed shirt. The one to avoid is a mid-length chain that half-hides behind the collar.

How do I layer two chains without tangling?

Keep a clear difference in length and put the heavier pendant on the longer chain. Weight lower down keeps the layers separated as you move.

Can I sleep or shower in a pendant chain?

Better not to. Fine chains take the most damage overnight, and moisture sitting in the links is what dulls a finish fastest.
