Beach and Vacation Jewellery: What Actually Survives Salt Water

Short answer: Salt water, chlorine and sunscreen strip plated jewellery faster than anything else you will put it through. For a beach holiday, wear stainless steel, PVD-coated or solid silver pieces, leave plated brass at home, and rinse everything in fresh water the same day. What does salt water actually do to jewellery?

Sea water is roughly 3.5% salt, and salt accelerates the oxidation that causes tarnish and plating failure. On plated brass the effect is fast, often visible after a single long swim. Sunscreen and sand make it worse: sunscreen leaves a film that traps salt against the metal, and sand acts as an abrasive on the plating.

Chlorine is harsher still. Pool water attacks the bond between plating and base metal, which is why pieces often look fine leaving the pool and dull two days later.

Which materials survive the beach?

Which styles work at the beach?

• Anklets. The defining beach piece. Keep them simple and secure, since sand and water loosen delicate clasps.
• Shell and ocean motifs. Cowrie, puka, mother-of-pearl, abalone. The strongest current trend in coastal jewellery.
• Huggies and small hoops. Nothing to lose in the water, nothing to catch in a towel or hair.
• Beaded and cord bracelets. Stackable, and cord does not tarnish at all.
• Toe rings. Practical and traditional, and they stay put.
• Layered fine chains. Works over swimwear, but only in steel or silver.

What to avoid: anything with glued stones or pearls. Water breaks down the adhesive, and you will lose stones rather than just dull the finish.

What about a beach wedding?

India’s beach wedding season runs roughly October to February, largely in Goa and coastal Kerala. Two practical rules: humidity plus sea air is harder on jewellery than a normal wedding, so favour steel or silver over plated pieces. And wind matters more than you expect, so long dangling earrings that look beautiful indoors will spend the ceremony tangled in your hair. Short drops and studs photograph better outdoors anyway.

How do you care for jewellery on a beach holiday?

1. Put jewellery on after sunscreen has absorbed, not before.
2. Rinse in fresh water the same day, every day. This single habit does most of the work.
3. Dry completely before storing. Damp metal in a humid hotel room tarnishes overnight.
4. Store in a sealed pouch with a silica sachet, not loose in a beach bag.
5. Take the expensive pieces off before swimming. Water makes fingers shrink and rings slip.
